Ms. Viel’s background includes marketing communications, technical writing, document design, translation/localization, and document control facilitation. She has also worked as a university teaching assistant, a legal secretary, and an administrative assistant to the president of a savings and loan. Clients range from corporations such as Medtronic Neurosurgery and NovaCoast IT Professional Services to smaller businesses like Dutcher Design and Casa Del Mar Inn.
Collaborating with authors and publishers to produce the best possible books has been Ms. Viel’s primary focus since 2006. She has edited and proofread over forty-five books and counts venerable publisher DeVorss & Co. as an ongoing client. Authors include Don Campbell, Susan Smith Jones, Bernard W. Bail, MD, and Olivia Slaughter and Jean Kubelun.
Ms. Viel has a bachelor’s degree in literature from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and has resided in the Santa Barbara area since 1980. In 2008 she completed four college extension courses in copyediting and English grammar and usage, earning a copyediting certificate from the University of California, San Diego. Ms. Viel enjoys attending writers’ conferences and actively participating in peer writing/critique groups.

A member of the Editorial Freelancers Association, the Bay Area Editors’ Forum, and the Small Publishers Association of North America, Ms. Viel stays current with the vicissitudes of editing and the English language through professional subscriptions such as Copyediting-L and other industry resources. She is a senior member of the Society for Technical Communication, having joined that august organization in 1997.
